The Mindsight Seminars offer an educational immersion into the science of insight and empathy. Building on the interdisciplinary view of the field called “Interpersonal Neurobiology,” these seminars, led by Dan Siegel, examine various aspects of the mind, the brain, and human relationships. Through this process, we begin to define the nature of human experience and clarify the basic elements of mental health. We explore ways to foster well-being and healthy development in ourselves and others across the lifespan.
Many of the seminars are designed exclusively for psychotherapists and other clinicians. These seminars offer psychotherapists a new way of thinking about human development that can enhance their work with individuals, families and groups. The seminars are predicated on the view that for any psychotherapy to be effective, it must change the brain. The therapeutic relationship helps focus the flow of energy and information in a way that can activate the brain in new ways that then leads to changes in how the mind functions. In seminar sessions we discuss how to focus the mind to change the brain toward a more integrated state. Seminars involve didactic teaching and clinical discussions in which we focus on the use of clinical assessment to evaluate the chaos and/or rigidity that hampers a person’s life, and how to use nine specific domains of integration as a framework for helping others cultivate well-being in their lives within the focused process of psychotherapy.
Other seminars are designed for a mix of clinicians, educators, parents, mindfulness practitioners and other people interested in the material. In these groups, the classes are focused on promoting insight and empathy—developing mindsight—to nurture well-being in ourselves and others. The sessions are geared towards both personal and professional applications of the material, and individuals who have expressed benefits from these classes include therapists, teachers, parents, mindfulness practitioners, physicians, social workers, attorneys, film executives, writers, clergy and administrators, among many others!
For all of the seminars, class participants help set the format and agenda with Dan at the beginning of the year. And, while all the seminars dive deeply into the ultimate questions of human development, well-being, and the nature of our subjective lives and insights from science, the classes are always filled with laughter and camaraderie.
