Parenting from the Inside Out – Course for Mental Health Professionals

Based on their bestselling book, Parenting from the Inside Out, Dr. Dan Siegel and Mary Hartzell offer this video workshop to professionals who support individuals on the journey of parenting. In this course, you will not only learn a philosophy of parenting that is based on neurobiology and attachment research, but you will also experience how this material can be translated and presented when working with parents.

Whether you are working with parents individually, creating groups, providing education, or looking to develop greater self-understanding, this 10-hour intensive provides valuable insight into a new way to approach parenting, oneself, and relationships in general. By reflecting on how our childhood experiences influence us today, we can consciously begin to break unhelpful patterns, embrace emotion with understanding and empathy, and create the connections we want in life, especially with our children.

Teachings are appropriate for health care professionals, as well as the general public.

By drawing upon the empirical findings of attachment science, this course explores the clinically valuable discovery that the best predictor of a child’s attachment to a caregiver is how that parent has made sense of the impact of their own childhood experiences on their development up until the present time. Another crucial finding of use to any educator or clinician working with parents or families is that an adult’s “state of mind with respect to attachment”–a measure of how one has come to make sense of their own childhood in a coherent narrative of their life–can grow from insecure to secure with professional guidance. In this course, professionals will learn this “inside-out” approach, empowering parents to make sense of their lives with new insights into brain research, attachment theory, and strategies to promote well-being and resilience in their offspring.
